New Paths to Communication

Speech and Language Assessments

“The child begins to perceive the world not only through his eyes but also through his speech

- Lev Vygotsky

From the moment children are born the complex process of language development begins as children are exposed to the language that surrounds them. As infants and toddlers, they begin to understand language and how to use it in order to have their needs met and to socially engage with others. Throughout their school years, children use language in their academics, social relationships, and adaptive living skills in order to organize and communicate ideas, connect new concepts and existing knowledge, and engage in social problem solving. Difficulties in these areas may suggest that specific language needs are impacting a child’s, adolescent’s, or young adult’s academics, social, emotional, and behavioural performance.
